"Give a hungry man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him to fish and you feed him for life."

How glasses can change the life of an individual...

Ribera Williams from St. Cruz was to be sold because he was born in poor circumstances. In spite of this, he caught the attention of Egon Scheich, the then 1st Chairman of the Development Service of German Opticians [Entwicklungsdienst deutscher Augenoptiker] (EDA), during a stay in Bolivia. After receiving training as an optician from the EDA and appropriate support, he became a qualified optometrist. He has had enormous success with his business and, in keeping with the spirit of the EDA, passes on his knowledge in his home country.

... and how they will change the lives of many!

Change of scene. A generator hums busily, the milling machine works reliably and a queue of people patiently lines up in front of a table with spectacle frames. This is the production of individual spectacles in just 30 minutes. Reinhard Müller, now 1st chairman of the DFA, invented RapidGlasses, a system that lives up to its name. What's more, the resulting vision aids help people all over the world to see better at affordable prices and with minimal equipment.

Whether with a generator in the jungle or their own workshops in the city, the EDA projects from Africa, Asia, Europe and America have many faces. However, one thing is the same in all of them: the goal of sustainable supply with individual and precise glasses and, above all, the empowerment and encouragement of the project partners; precisely, to teach "fishing". With all due respect, the EDA does not simply place "its" systems, but always involves the local project partners and takes their way of thinking into account. In this way, functioning processes are left behind and the quality of life of many people is improved.

Because vision is a precious commodity. Those who are not lucky enough to have access to affordable glasses are often excluded from education or social life. Especially where there are no school books and everything has to be copied from the blackboard, it is necessary to be able to recognise the writing. Due to uncorrected refractive errors, however, many cannot use their potential.

A seemingly small thing like a correctly fitted pair of glasses can change this.
